how to mix colors

Welcome to This Week’s Bud to Bloom Topic: Mastering Watercolor and Acrylic Mixing

Are you Team Watercolor or Team Acrylic? What if I told you that you don’t have to choose? By mixing these two mediums, you can unlock new artistic possibilities and create stunning effects in your artwork!

Let’s dive in and explore how you can master the technique and how to mix colors of different mediums.

Can You Mix Different Types of Paint?

The short answer: Yes and no. It all depends on the type of paint. A simple rule to remember is that water-based mediums, like watercolor and acrylic, can be mixed freely. Since both dissolve in water, they blend smoothly and can be layered for unique textures and effects.

However, oil-based paints, like traditional oil paints, don’t mix well with water-based mediums. If you try to combine acrylic with oil paint, you’ll end up with a separated, globby mess. Over time, these layers may not adhere properly, leading to the deterioration of your artwork. While oil and acrylic can sometimes be used together in layering techniques, that’s a discussion for another time!

Why Mix Watercolor and Acrylic?

Yes, you absolutely can mix watercolor and acrylic, and I personally love using this technique! It’s become second nature in my creative process because each medium brings something special to the table:

  • Acrylic dries quickly, builds layers effortlessly, and is excellent for blocking in shapes.
  • Watercolor is rich in pigment, flows beautifully, and soaks into the surface for organic, expressive effects.

How to Mix Watercolor and Acrylic for Stunning Results

Acrylic’s water-based formula allows it to be diluted with water, which can create fluid washes and drips. However, adding too much water can weaken the pigment, making the color appear less vibrant. This is where watercolor comes in!

To maintain strong pigment while creating washes, you can:

  1. Apply watercolor over dry acrylic layers to add depth and luminosity.
  2. Pre-mix watercolor and acrylic on your palette before adding water to control vibrancy.

This combination allows you to achieve bold, layered effects while keeping your colors rich and saturated. Below, I’ve included test swatches on canvas to show you how this technique works in action!

Ready to experiment with watercolor and acrylic mixing? Try it in your next painting session and unlock a whole new level of creativity! 🎨✨

Check out the experiment here:

In this graphic, I’ve created a visual comparison of watercolor pigment vs. acrylic pigment and the results you get when mixing the two.

easy painting tutorials

Let’s start with the acrylic-only row. Each thumbnail gradually contains more water, with the final one being a very diluted wash. While the color remains red, you’ll notice that by the last thumbnail, most of its vibrancy is lost—sometimes an effect you may want, but often a limitation when aiming for bold washes.

Now, looking at the watercolor-only row, the difference is clear. The red remains much brighter and holds onto its vibrancy even as it’s diluted. The final thumbnail still has significantly more pigment compared to the acrylic wash. The same applies to the pink watercolor—I absolutely LOVE this How to mix colors in acrylic and watercolorpink! Even at its most diluted state, it retains a rich, vibrant hue.

Now, Let’s Mix Them!

The last two rows show a red watercolor + red acrylic mix, gradually thinned out just like the previous examples. What do we see?

Comparing the final thumbnail of the reds, this combination produces the brightest and most consistent wash, outperforming either medium on its own. The pink and red mix shows a similar result—high vibrancy and fuller coverage across each stage.

These mixes are fantastic for washes because they give you the best of both worlds:

  • Watercolor provides rich, glowing pigment.
  • Acrylic ensures even, lasting coverage.

I hope this inspires you to experiment! Try mixing watercolor and acrylic in your next wash or artwork, and let me know how it turns out! 🎨✨

Crafty activities and events in Washington State

???? Spring is just around the corner—it’s peeking at us, ready to bloom! ????✨ This season is all about fresh beginnings and growth, both in nature and within ourselves. Whether you’re a brand-new creator or you’ve been making and painting for years, spring is the perfect time to challenge yourself and nurture your creativity.

One of the biggest hurdles for any creator? Simply feeling creative. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “I’m not creative at all—I don’t have a single creative bone in my body!” On the other hand, even experienced artists sometimes hit a wall, feeling uninspired and stuck. But trust me—losing your creative spark doesn’t mean it’s gone forever.

Creativity is like a seed ????

It needs water, sunlight, and the right conditions to grow. If a seed is left to freeze in the snow or dry out in the heat, it won’t sprout. The same goes for creativity—it doesn’t disappear, it just needs to be nurtured! If you’ve ever felt creatively blocked, the best way to break free is through action.

How do you wake up your creativity?

You have to get moving—experiment, make a mess, take risks, and embrace the process without fear. The hardest thing to do when you’re not feeling creative is to create, but that’s exactly what unlocks the flow again. Think of it like starting a rusty engine—it might take a few tries, but once it’s running, it hums along beautifully.

This is the heart of Artvana—creating an environment where creativity can thrive. Just like a plant needs water and sunlight, we need time, materials, and inspiration to create. That’s exactly what our paint-and-sip classes offer—a space where your creativity can take a deep drink and come back to life!

The benefits of rekindling your creative spark are priceless. Creativity seeps into every part of life—from your wardrobe to home décor to problem-solving at work. The more you practice, the more it flows into everything you do!

My Top 3 Ways to Jumpstart Your Creativity This Spring

???? Get Inspired – Inspiration is the fuel for creativity. Visit a local art museum and explore the colors, styles, and stories behind the artwork. What draws you in? What makes you feel something? Some museums even offer studio spaces where you can create on the spot! (Check out my recommended museums at the end of this post.)

???? Make a Mess – If creativity feels intimidating, start by playing! Gather any fun supplies—paint, glue, magazines, fabric scraps—and create a mixed-media piece with no pressure or plan. Just let go and see what emerges. Sometimes, the best way to find your style is to get messy and explore!

Art museums in Seattle Wa, Tacoma Wa

????️ Take a Class – If making a mess on your own feels overwhelming, take an art or craft class! Classes provide an easy, structured way to dive into creativity without having to buy supplies or figure things out alone. Plus, you’ll meet others and feed off their energy and ideas.

???? Remember: We all have creativity inside us. It’s just waiting to bloom! Stop telling yourself “I’m not creative” and start exploring. This spring, give yourself permission to create, play, and grow. ????✨

If you live in Washington State here are some of my favorite Museums and creative experiences you can enjoy today!

  1. Frye Art Museum Located in Seattle WA, Frye Art Museum is FREE and a great place to immerse yourself in art for a few hours, they offer sketch pads and pencils and have helpful and knowledgeable staff.
  2. Tacoma Art Museum Located in Tacoma Washington TAM is a fairly large museum focused on local art.  Some of their recent exhibits have included Chihuly Glass, Charles Petersons Nirvana, and Karen Hackenburgs Sea Change
  3. Seattle Art Museum Located in Seattle Washington this museum is large and boasts a number of ongoing exhibits including Yiirkala Art from Australia’s Top End, Impressionism in the Global Nineteenth Century, and more.

A visit to any one of these Museums in Washington State will be sure to inspire you! Enjoy!

We offer a large selection of approximately 30-40 classes per month, so you have more date and time options to paint.  One thing that really makes Artvana unique is that we do not have our own ‘Studio’ space.  Instead of limiting ourselves to one location that people need to travel to, we travel to you!  With a large list of excellent local partner venues, you can find classes near you almost anywhere!

Each venue brings a different vibe and atmosphere so you can pick and choose your paint and sips.  From coffee houses to breweries, alcohol or N/A, we know there is a paint-and-sip event waiting in our calendar that will be perfect for you!

#1. Top Rung Brewing, Lacey Washington

Top Rung is one of our long-standing partner venues and we have been painting it up there since 2018!  Retired firefighters opened Top Rung Brewing which has a stylish firefighter theme including hanging ladders.  It’s big and spacious with huge tables for painting which we love, well-lit and family-friendly.

Of course, we have to mention Lucas the long-time Taproom manager who has been holding down the fort with us all these years.  Be sure to say hi to him the next time you are in!  With great brews crafted on-site, to trivia nights, to community events and run clubs, you are sure to find community (and creativity) at this Lacey Brewery.  Visit Top Rung Brewing Website

#2. Cup of Swords Tavern, Olympia Washington

If you are looking for a paint and sip where you can really dive into your creative and make-believe side, this partner venue is where you will find it!  Cup of Swords is a recently opened tavern in Olympias Downtown that puts the FUN back into going out!  Besides regular Artvana Paint and Sips twice a month they also have some really unique and fun events happening regularly like:

Dress like a Pirate Day | The Scupper Monkeys Band | DND games and one-shots | Costume parties

Come indulge your fantasies with us at Cup of Swords Tavern, join their ‘Shield Wall’ mug club and get a huge HUZZAH when you order your drinks!  Visit Cup of Swords Tavern Website

As mentioned we don’t just paint at alcohol-friendly venues, we have some sweet spots for you non-drinkers too!  This one is close to my heart as it is my very own sisters shop!  I love that we get to collaborate as local business owners and the Artvana events here are relaxing and community-focused.

All of Fog and Fern Coffees pastries in the case are hand-made by my sistah!  They also serve top-of-the-line coffee brewed and poured expertly for your sipping pleasure.  Come check them out I am sure it will be one of your new favorite hangs.  View the Fog and Fern Coffee Website

Things to do for dry January in Washington state

As a beautiful New Year unfolds before us many of you may be taking this chance to cut back or even participate in Dry January.

Dry January can be a challenge to complete when so much of our culture seems to revolve around drinking but today I am going to share some great ideas and insights with you to make your Dry January more fun!

As a recovered alcoholic myself with nearly 4 years sober I know how un-fun a dry January can sound.  Boring right, staying at home holed up trying to avoid bars, friends, and parties where we may be tempted to drink.  Trying to do something ‘good’ for us shouldn’t be so hard.  The key to accomplishing your resolution is in finding NEW ways to interact with friends and community that are not SO focused on catching a buzz.

Even if you aren’t thinking about trying dry January these tips are still great if you struggle with social anxiety, depression, stress or the winter blues.

So now that you have decided to give it a go what are you going to do all month?

You might not see the challenge until someone calls you up and wants to grab a beer or invites you to a celebration.  The key to a successful dry January is realizing that you made this choice, no one is making you do it and it doesn’t have to be a long and terrible struggle to make it through.

Change is always hard but it is also invigorating and exciting if you let it be!  Dry January could become a month you look forward to a way to reset, revive and reconnect with yourself and your body.

Purposefully use this time to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace those uncomfortable feelings.  It’s easier when you know its coming, when you choose to do something that you know will make you uncomfortable you can head into the activity head on knowing you are participating in this to grow and challenge yourself.

Maybe you have always wanted to participate in a running or walking group but always put it off, because, it’s easier to snuggle in with a glass of wine.  Joining a local club is a great activity for dry January!

Perhaps you have entertained the thought of taking a new class such as Zumba, kickboxing, painting, sewing, bread baking or even sculpting.  Shifting your focus away from ‘I’m avoiding this” to “I’m trying to accomplish this” is a huge step in the right direction.  Taking a new class is a great way to focus your mind in a new direction instead of focusing on how many days are left in January and stand between you and an ice cold frosty beer!

Alongside testing your comfort zone, setting goals and looking ahead, going sober for dry January will give you a huge boost to your mental clarity.  What could be better than a clear, fresh mind as we go into a new year!  Plus with all the extra clarity, physical energy and extra cash you will have from abstaining this month a new activity is just what you need to take advantage of these benefits.

Now I said three ways to make dry January more fun.  The third piece of this puzzle is YOUYou are already taking steps that are good for your body and your social life but what about you?  Self-care during dry January is hands-down the most important aspect.  Taking a break from alcohol means you will have more time and energy to spend time with yourself.  Indulge in a new way, treat yourself to a spa day instead of a Rosé, write a letter to yourself or in your journal instead of using Chardonnay to wind down.  Because you will have extra clarity during the month it’s an opportune time to reconnect and get back in touch with your inner self.  Slow down, be in the moment, and sip on something nourishing instead.

That’s my two cents now let’s get into some actionable ways you can make Dry January fun!

  1. Join a club, something that will get you out of the house and preferably moving but any kind of club will do!  Expose yourself to new people and ideas and keep your calendar full by adding a weekly activity.  Here are some fun clubs and activities you can join in Thurston, Pierce and Kitsap County Washington.

Olympia Run Club

Gig Harbor Run Club

Tacoma Girls Book Club

Olympia Silent Book Club

2. Join a class!  Of course I have to mention Artvana classes here as well as a few of my other favorites!  You may be thinking wait, isn’t Artvana a paint and sip?  Don’t you have to drink? The Answer is NO!

Aside from our Paint and sips we hold at Breweries and Wineries we also have a whole bunch of classes that are not alcohol focused or completely alcohol free!  Most of our N/A partner venues are local coffee shops in the Lacey and Olympia area, and in our other 5 service counties.  Take Fog and Fern Coffeehouse in Lacey Washington for example.  We hold a monthly class here on a Sunday afternoon.  Aside from the afternoon vibe they do not serve any alcohol but instead offer delicious coffee drinks and hand-made pastries and food items.  It’s the perfect change of pace and something fun to do for dry January.  Here are links to our next classes happening at Fog and Fern.  I do hope you will join us for one of these relaxing paint and sip classes.
